Self Guided Hiking Tour

Before setting out on a hike please remember to take with you any food and water you may require. During hot summer months I'd recommend a 1.5 liter bottle per person at least. Also, access to the hillside may be prohibited during certain seasons due to fire risk so please ask me or the local police for information regarding this.

To start the hike, you may begin in the main port of spetses here:

Checkpoint 1: Main Port

This is the main port of Spetses called "Dapia" which is an old Ottoman word for a fortified place; hence the cannons. From the map pin, head up the hill watching out for traffic since it is a narrow street. Do not turn anywhere at the crossroads and keep walking straight up until you reach this area:

Checkpoint 2: Uphill Turn

This will be the only turn you need to make until you reach the summit. Bare left around the bend and stay on this road until you are at the top. At some point the road will turn to a dirt track. Continue until you are at the crossroads at the summit here:

Checkpoint 3: Hunter's Lodge

The two buildings you can see are the new and old hunting lodges originally founded by Sotiris Anargyros; a very important benefactor of Spetses. From this point, bare right up the slight hill and keep walking straight along the dirt road. The rest stop can be found at this location:

Checkpoint 4: Prophet Elijah's Chapel

From the pin, which is on the S shape of the road, you should see a path heading up towards a small chapel. Take this approximately 50 meter path and you should find yourself at the spot. The chapel is usually open and you may even be able to light a candle. The old cistern in front doubles down as a viewing platform and you should be able to find some chairs and tables to use for your picnic. Otherwise you may sit on the wall.

Once done enjoying the wonderful panoramic view, head back on yourselves until this point:

Checkpoint 5: Daskalakis Church

At the pin, you will find a turn where there is a first aid box on a tree. There is also an area where the hunters keep their dogs. They may bark but they are safely contained, however unfortunate the sight may be.... Take the turning left around the hunter's enclosures and follow the path straight until you reach the church. The view from up here is also stunning and I appreciate how the town looks from this angle.

To continue, find the trail can be a bit confusing. I'd recommend you go underneath the church's bell and walk straight away from the front door until the edge. From there if you look down you will see a trail that you need to follow to the right. This is a wonderful walk through a mature pine forest and will end up in a clearing here:

Checkpoint 6: Saint Vasilis Church

Saint Vasilis is the Greek Orthodox version of Father Christmas. The view from here is also very nice and just below the church there are some goats that many people like to watch. I find it amusing to feed them grass sometimes.

To continue down, start from the location of the pin and keep looping around that road and heading down. It will eventually become paved. Soon after that, you will find yourself at Checkpoint 2 from where you can head straight down the hill to the town again.

I hope you enjoyed the hike. Feel free to give me some feedback from your experience.
